GORI. ATENI SIONI. UPLISTSIKHE.
GORI – a town in eastern Georgia – one of the oldest cities in Georgia, founded by King David the Builder. The name of the city takes from the rock formation (Goraki) in the center of the city, where there are the remains of ancient Goris-Tsikhe (castle). In Gori you will visit Stalin’s House Museum – dedicated to the life of the most famous native of the city – Joseph Stalin, who became head of the Soviet government from 1925 to 1953.
During the tour you will also see ATENI SIONI – Georgian monastery in the village of Ateni Sioni (10 km from Gori). It was built in the I-st half of the VII century.
The next point of this tour route is UPLISTSIKHE – the cave city, carved in the rock. The town was founded at the end of II – the beginning of the I millennium BC. and was finally abandoned in the XIX century. The uniqueness of the monument is that it retained the remnants of architectural and religious buildings constructed over several millennia. Uplistsikhe included more than 700 caves and cave structures, of which only 150 have survived to the present time.
